The Great Heating Debate in New Mexico
If you’re replacing your heating system, you’ve probably heard that heat pumps are the future. At the same time, gas furnaces remain the most popular choice in Albuquerque. So which one is better for your home? The honest answer: it depends on your home, your budget, and your priorities.
How Each System Works
Gas furnace: Burns natural gas to create heat, then distributes warm air through your ductwork. Modern furnaces are 80–98% efficient (AFUE rating).
Heat pump: Transfers heat rather than creating it. In winter, it extracts heat from outdoor air and moves it inside. In summer, it reverses to work as an AC. Modern heat pumps can heat efficiently down to very low temperatures.
How They Compare in Albuquerque’s Climate
Albuquerque’s climate is well-suited for heat pumps. Our winters are mild compared to the Midwest — average January lows are in the mid-20s°F. Modern cold-climate heat pumps perform efficiently well below that. However, during occasional deep freezes, a heat pump may rely on backup electric resistance heating, which is expensive.
Advantage: Furnace — If your home already has natural gas, a furnace provides reliable, powerful heat even on the coldest nights without electric bill spikes.
Advantage: Heat Pump — You get heating AND cooling from one system. If you need to replace both furnace and AC, a heat pump can save money. Plus, heat pumps qualify for larger federal tax credits and rebates.
Cost Comparison
A gas furnace generally costs less upfront. However, heat pumps qualify for the federal 25C tax credit (up to $2,000) and additional NM utility rebates. When you factor in replacing BOTH furnace and AC, total system cost can be comparable. Operating costs depend on gas vs. electricity prices — currently, natural gas in New Mexico remains relatively affordable.
The Dual Fuel Option
Many Albuquerque homeowners choose dual fuel systems — a heat pump paired with a gas furnace. The heat pump handles mild weather heating (most efficient), and the furnace kicks in during the coldest periods. Best of both worlds.
What About Mini-Splits?
Ductless mini-split systems are another heat pump option, especially for homes without ductwork or for adding heating and cooling to specific rooms.
